Home of 1.8 million Geoffroy’s Rousette fruit bats~ Davao del Norte

MONFORT BAT SANCTUARY| a bat sanctuary located at Brgy, Tambo in Babak District in the island garden of Samal (Samal Island),a province of Davao, Del Norte.

Home of 1.8 million fruit bats (Geoffroy’s Rousette) with Scientific name: Rousettus amplexicaudatusn, known to be the largest colony of such species in the world that live in a single cave with five openings where the seething mass of sleeping fruit bats can be seen coating the walls of the cave.

The bats have made their home in the cave for untold generations. And today, the Bat Sanctuary shows no signs of slowing down, since during the recent cave mapping, they found that the female fruits bats were continuously getting pregnant, a sign that their colony continually multiplies.

Unfortunately though, some of the bats' natural habitats in the island were disturbed or even destroyed by human encroachment, leading bats to seek shelter in the only inviolable area in the island.

Norma Monfort, the current owner has made efforts to balance the bats well-being with the need for continuous scientific study and tourist revenue.

Without bats, the number of insects and pests would significantly increase at a rapid rate. Without bats, we will have to rely on pesticides for insect control.

FAST FACT
One bat can capture 200 mosquitoes in one hour; one large bat colony can eat half a million pounds of insects and pests each night.
